First Week

I survived my first week of my senior year!  It felt like the longest week ever.  Tuesday felt like it should have been Thursday.  Hopefully the weeks will start going faster or this is going to be a long year.  On Wednesday I saw my first patient at the VA.  He was a pretty easy patient with quite a few teeth missing.  I was glad my first patient back after the summer break was easy.  He had some implants so I was able to learn how to use implant scalers.  He has great oral hygiene so there really wasn't a lot for me to clean but it was nice to be back in the mouth and remember how to use the mirror and my instruments.
Today was the highlight of my week.  In dental medicine we talked about the syringe, needle, and cartridge and then we injected chicken wings with anesthetic.  I was really surprised at how easily the needle went into the chicken.  We also used water with red food coloring in it to practice aspirating.  I was surprised at how little pressure is needed to aspirate and inject.  I wish I would have had my camera with me today to take pictures.  Who knows, maybe giving shots really will be fun!
