- When instrumenting the facials of the mandibular anteriors hold the instrument with the V of the hand grasp. This helps keep the correct angulation and adaptation.
- When polishing, hold the prophy paste in the palm of my left hand, hold the suction with my left hand and the prophy angle with my right hand. Use the suction to retract the patient's cheek and keep the saliva off of the prophy angle. This trick is amazing. I won't have saliva flying around the prophy angle anymore!
- When instrumenting the mandibular right molars, sit in the 11 o'clock position, cup the patient's chin with my left hand and use the mirror in my left hand to retract the cheek then go to town instrumenting.
- TOWARDS THE TIP/TOE, TOWARDS THE TOOTH, AND TWIST!!! I thought I did pretty good at this until Dr. Hanson was watching me today. I think if I can remember to do this better I will be more effective in instrumenting.

First Mockboard Was a Success!
Today was my first mockboard day of my senior year. I PASSED!!! My score was 91.25%. I really wasn't too stressed out about it. The only part I was really worried about was if my patient would show up and be on time. Once I saw that she was at the clinic I calmed down quite a bit.
My patient was a trooper. She didn't have local anesthesia so I was kind of worried that she would be uncomfortable and hurt but she slept through most of my scaling time. I could tell by the end of the appointment that she was done and was starting to hurt. I feel kind of bad for the mockboard and board patients because they get moved back and forth from different chairs and have multiple people poke around in her mouth. I'm just glad that she put up with it all.
I'm so grateful that the instructors at Weber State give us the opportunity to practice the whole process and procedures of the clinical board exam. I wouldn't want to show up to take that exam and not know what to do, when to do it, and what papers to turn in when. Thanks instructors for all the time and effort you put in to making us great!

Children's Health Connection
Today was the Children's Health Connection. It was held at Weber State in the dental hygiene clinic. I was able to clean kids teeth for the event. It was a good experience for me to work with children. When I worked in a private dental office we didn't see very many kids and the ones that we did see were pretty well behaved. Two of the kids I saw today were pretty uncooperative. By the end of their appointment I was able to at least brush and floss their teeth and apply fluoride.
For this event kids in the Ogden area receive free x-rays, cleanings, and some dental work by local dentists. At the beginning of the morning there were a lot of the kids that had appointments that didn't even show up. Pretty sad that they have an opportunity for free dental care and the parents forget the appointment.
With the kids that I saw I really tried to focus on their own home care. I showed them and their parents the correct way to brush and floss their teeth and encouraged them to brush at least twice a day. I hope that they will use this information and take better care of their teeth. Nothing Like Waiting Until the Last Minute
Yesterday in clinic was my last opportunity to find a patient that qualified for mockboards next week. I was super nervous that I wasn't going to be able to find anyone. I had a screening scheduled for a person that would probably qualify so I was hoping with all my might that she would qualify. After being afraid that I wouldn't find anyone for mockboards I ended up finding two mockboard patients. Everything works out in the end I guess. Now I just have to worry about my mockboard patient showing up Tuesday morning. Wish me luck!
